Seven Malaysians In Zamboanga Are Safe - Wisma Putra

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven Malaysians located in strife-torn Zamboanga, Mindanao, the Philippines are safe, said Wisma Putra.

The Foreign Ministry said they were not caught in a confrontation between the army and a group of insurgents from the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) known as Rouge MNLF Element (RME).

It said two of them had been given assistance to leave Zamboanga by road as the city's airport was closed to commercial flights.

"Another two left for another city in southern Philippines before the RME attack on Sept 9, two more are being protected by the Philippine authorities while another one is reported to be in Basilan," it said in a statement Saturday.

It said Wisma Putra was trying to contact a Malaysian residing in Basilan as its priority was to move out Malaysian citizens from the conflict area.

Efforts to fly them home are being pursued, it added.

Meanwhile, Wisma Putra reiterated its advice against travel to parts of Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, until the situation returns to normal.
